Caleb Klauder is the exception: He plays top-shelf classic honky tonk (and occasionally, bluegrass) with the pained enthusiasm of a grizzled Southerner twice his age. On the brand-new Western Country, Klauder tackles canon staples (like the Red Hayes/Jack Rhodes anti-envy rant “Satisfied Mind” and the aching “What Was I Supposed to do?”) with the same passion as his originals, and the line between them pretty much evaporates. Few voices in modern country carry the world-weary authenticity (think Hank Williams Sr., Charlie Monroe, Dwight Yoakam) that Klauder puts forward so effortlessly.

Music has become stagnant. Combat this and support your local music scene. That’s right this is YOUR music scene. These musicians are from your hometown, they went to school with your sister, work with your cousin, and have the same favorite coffee shop as you . And many of them write about things that locals relate to and understand. This isn’t a endless soundtrack of sappy love songs and computer generated beats this is real humans doing what they love and promoting their art.

Local music has a DIY ethic. Most local bands and artists book their own gigs and design their own posters (and hang them up) before their show. Day of the show they haul all of their gear, usually in the back of an old van or a borrowed truck, set it up themselves and do their own sound check. If they rest of us could imagine the amount of time and energy spent just to share what they do, we would probably put down that beer and save the rest of our conversation for later to really listen to what they were showing us.

Just because we haven’t heard of them or because they play small local venues does not mean that local artist have less talent than our favorite big name bands. What is the difference between these local bands and big name bands? … Exposure. Venues like The Boiler Room provide the space for them to get this exposure but the real responsibility lies with you, the fans, the audience, the locals. Yes the Flathead has a local music scene. Get to know your local venues and try out a band that sounds interesting to you. Most of them are cheaper than going to a movie and trust me the entertainment and atmosphere is better too. Your time and a few of your dollars are all that is needed to encourage a thriving local music scene. Make the Boiler Room your first stop in supporting local music.

Check out this list of reasons to support local music from http://ohms.nu/localmusic.htm

Suff’s Top Thirteen Reasons to Support Local Music:

Reason 13: A typical rock concert costs $40. For $40 you can see 5-8 local shows at a cost of $5 – $8 to get in the door.

Reason 12: A typical rock concert features 2 or 3 bands. A local show typically features 3 to 5 bands, or more.

Reason 11: Typical rock concerts are generally held in large venues. Often it is difficult to see the performers as well as if you’d watched it on TV.

Reason 10: Cameras and recording devices are usually not allowed at a typical rock concert. Local bands usually let you tape their shows and take photos to your heart’s content.

Reason 9: You usually have to drive further to go to a typical rock concert, and park far away once you get there.

Reason 8: You often have to pay for parking.

Reason 7: You frequently have to wait for a long time in a traffic jam to get out of the parking lot.

Reason 6: You usually can’t dance at a typical rock concert.

Reason 5: You probably won’t make any new friends at a typical rock concert.

Reason 4: You usually can’t meet the band members at the typical rock concert. At a local show, you can often become friends with them.

Reason 3: CDs from typical rock bands cost about $15. CDs from local bands usually cost between $5-$10.

Reason 2: Regular t-shirts from typical rock bands are going for around $30!!!!! Local bands usually charge about $5-$10, and you sometimes have your choice of shirt styles. (Hey wait a minute, aren’t we advertising for you when we wear them?)

Reason 1: It is a myth that nationally known musicians with record contracts are any better than local musical acts. The nationally known acts are usually marketed to us in the same way the latest big movie is sold. Yes, the Strokes sound really good, have very well produced videos, and have an appealing look. But you could take Strange Division, a band from Akron, and give them the same budget, and voila! you have the Next Big Thing.

We are starting a tour, a pub crawl of music, which may in fact include some pubs. Before this my experience of music in Montana has consisted of jam sessions in my parents living room, a few open mic nights friends have played and whatever was going on at Reds or The Great Northern that night. My general lament was there is no good music in Montana. But the changing musical climate in Kalispell, including the music being played at The Boiler Room, made me want to improve my bleak attitude toward the local music scene. So for the next few weeks I plan on visiting as many venues and listening to as many different types of music as possible in the Flathead and surrounding areas and report my discoveries and thoughts on music in Montana.

Thursday April 1st, 2010, Open Mic Night Hosted by Christen Johnson @ The Blue Canyon

Here I started the exploration. It was an easy starting point. I had been here before. I knew the atmosphere, a hotel bar with the guests towards the back having a night cap, a few locals around the bar, and the music lovers switching their seats around to get the best view. As the speakers are set up a couple look up at the towering JBL’s and say, “Oh no we are in the wrong spot.” The musician quickly responds, “Oh no you are in the sweet spot.” The couple get up to leave and we swoop in and take “the sweet spot.”

Christian Johnson of The Mission Mountain Wood Band hand picks about six musicians to play for the night, and he fills in the quiet spots with his impressive mandolin playing which includes some Rodrigo y Gabriela and an Irish tune for Neill. The evening started with a familiar face, Nathaniel, who has played at The BR before on open mic night. His Jack Johnsonesque stylings were followed by a solo guitarist, and a band of four that for the evening was only two. Promoting local live music in the Flathead is one of Christians main objectives for this night and for everything he does. He makes this known almost pleading with the people in the room to not forget about music in these hard times and a few seem to take it to heart.

Friday April 2nd, 2010 – David Boone @ The Boiler Room

Friday night was spent where most of my Friday nights are spent at The Boiler Room. This night was exciting though, David Boone was back with his band The Controls for another sold out show. At 7:30pm the lights dimmed and people piled in and despite the whirring of the grinder David Boone started the set playing his folksy guitar and coupling it with heartfelt lyrics. We all love it but we heard him play this before and we are excited to hear the full band. So David exits the stage, the espresso machine starts up again while the band sets up including a full drum kit and an upright bass sure to put the acoustics and the neighbors to the test.

All the guys get on stage ready to prove The BR can handle the sound of a full band. As they start this second set the room absorbs the energy and people start to sway and eventually break out into full on dancing. They finish the night with a deserved encore and promise to return.

Saturday April 3rd, 2010 – Whitefish, Mt Assorted Venues

A friend had recommended The Craggy Range as a good spot to continue my research, so we made the trek to Whitefish to see Heck Yeah a local electronica group. We sit down and order food and the waitress makes sure we know that they will be playing very loud music and will we be alright? We assure her we can handle it.

Two guys with Mac’s are setting up on stage. Behind them is a back drop of balloons and cloth breaking up projected video of snowboarders which we can assume is at Big Mt. The beat starts slowly, than another beat is layered on top of another beat crescendoing into an intense mix that felt more like Amsterdam than Whitefish. The snow gear clad patrons thought the same and many moved quickly on. Across the street at the Great Northern a little more relatable Montana style band was playing “Play That Funky Music” and other well known danceable favorites. And it worked people were dancing and having a good time, but where they really listening to the music?

This question lingers in the minds of many musicians after playing these kinds of venues. Are they being appreciated for their talent or are they just background noise for others’ good night out? I think many local musicians would echo Idaho singer songwriter Josh Ritter’s sentiments when he sings, “It’s my home … last night I dreamt that I grew wings, I found a place where they could hear me sing.” Fortunately for us they have not all flown away and there are people who do want to hear them sing.

With a solid foot in the folk tradition of storytelling, Boone effortlessly straddles the fence between pop, rock and blues without ever compromising originality or authenticity. Seeing Boone live is stepping into his personal diary and openly exploring his doubts, beliefs, spirituality & romance with the weight that each deserves. Boone stems from the lineage of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and more recently, Jack Johnson and Counting Crows. His music is intricate, yet balanced, rhythm and melody – striking a chord with the roots of folk rock. Sometimes humorous, sometimes philosophical, but always relevant, Boone is like poetry put to music–a true voice for the modern, wandering and wondering soul.

Tickets are now on sale at the Boiler Room Coffee Shop in Kalispell. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and can be purchased at the Boiler Room or by calling 406.260.4122. The Show will be on the 2nd of April 2010 at 7pm.

The Boiler Room Coffee House is located on 525 8th Street East, Kalispell.

Ceres Bakery opened almost four years ago giving the valley it’s only French style bakery with flaky pastries and croissants and freshly made crusty bread of different varieties. Along with their main street shop they also have an extensive back end where they supply many restaurants in town with their creations, including The Boiler Room. Rick at Ceres bakery specially developed the recipe for the bread for our pressed sandwiches. This light bread turns crispy when grilled. We are thankful to have a high quality bread to hold all of our high quality ingredients! Hannah also started making five extra croissants every day which are delivered fresh every morning. A flaky butter alternative to some of our other breakfast goodies.

Montana Bagel Co. is responsible for … yes our bagels. All of us at The Boiler Room excitedly welcome the fresh bagel delivery (usually because the bagels are running dangerously low). Plain, blueberry, and everything bagels come to us all wrapped in brown paper bags that trap the fresh bagel smell until we open them and fill the air with the hunger inducing aroma. These bagels make an amazing base for our breakfast bagel sandwiches and hold up well to our sandwich grill. Visit Mt Bagel Co. over on Highway 2 in Evergreen or better yet stop by The Boiler Room and have their bagels here!

Just a little post about some of our suppliers who do great work!

First we have Simply Sweet. You can visit the girls at Simply Sweet over on 6th Ave W. They keep us supplied with the chocolate macaroons and flourless chocolate cake that our gluten free customers and their wheat eating counterparts both enjoy. In addition they bake us a different weekly pie including the recent favorite pecan pie. The ever popular chocolate or raspberry cupcakes are also hand delivered by the Simply Sweet girls. Our staple seasonally flavored cream cheese roll and quick breads keep our case full of tasty choices for everyone looking for a quick treat to go along with our coffee. These girls are always willing to change a recipe or to try a new one just to meet all of our customers (all of you) wants and needs. And they are fast too, so you never have to live long without your favorite Boiler Room treat.

Ethiopia is commonly known as the birthplace of coffee and unlike other coffee growing regions 50% of the produce stays within the country. The importance of and passion for coffee in this community means that they have perfected their bean. This version of the Ethiopian Shashamane is freshly washed with the generous rain fall that is collected at the community water center. Washing the beans results in a bright acidic coffee that has flavors of lemon and orange blossom balanced with honey and fruit. Caffe Vita roast this bean to a light/medium roast creating a uniquely flavored easy to drink cup of drip. Come in to The Boiler Room and enjoy this coffee fresh from one of our air pots or try it our favorite way in a personal french press. Doing this you support not only your local economy but that of the community of Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. Not to mention just a great way to warm up and wake up.
